Join us in-person at Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre for the Perth live event component of Waves of Wisdom: Coastal & Marine Perspectives across WA.

Occuring simultaneously in Perth, Bunbury and Geraldton, this hybrid event will feature live crosses between venues for a morning program featuring sessions from:

  • Nic Dunlop (Geraldton): The Conservation Strategy Launch for the Australian Fairy Tern

The newly established WA Seabird Conservation Network Inc will present on its research and conservation efforts, and launch its Conservation Strategy for the Australian Fairy Tern in the mid-west and Abrolhos Regions. These efforts will tie into the work of the Indian Ocean Seabird Group.

  • Dr Kim Lema (Bunbury): Educational Marine Areas (EMA) Australia

Dr Lema will present on the Educational Marine Areas (EMA) concept, originating in the Marquesas Islands (French Polynesia) in 2012 and expanding to over 1000 locations, including Australia’s first EMA in Margaret River. EMAs are small coastal areas actively managed by primary and secondary school students. Accompanied by their teacher and assisted by expert marine scientists, the students study the area and its environmental values and decide how to preserve its natural and cultural heritage.

  • Rada Tomanovic (Perth): Community Impact, Management & Mapping of Cottesloe’s Natural Areas

The Town of Cottesloe and Cottesloe Coastcare Association (CCA) have invested considerable effort in maintaining and improving the condition of the natural areas in Cottesloe. Rada, from Syrinx Environmental, recently undertook a vegetation condition survey of the Town’s natural areas and present comparative results against a baseline survey undertaken in 2015.

Each venue will then break for networking and lunch before heading back for a local program of speakers.

The Perth session will feature presentations from:

  • Meg Anklesaria (Cambridge Coastcare): What high tech monitoring reveals about our coastline

Cambridge Coastcare was awarded a grant of $10,240 by Coastwest in 2022, for a project that will use monitoring, hi-res mapping and even 3D modelling to ground-truth sand movement trends (erosion or accretion) and vegetation success rates. This data will quantify the effect of dune stablisation treatments undertaken by the group and its partners, which will be compared with 2018-19 data to document any observable trends in the dynamic elements at play on our coastline.

  • Marc Fletcher (Tangaroa Blue): The new Australian Marine Debris Initiative database

Most coastal conservationists are familiar with Tangaroa Blue’s Australian Marine Debris Initiative (AMDI), an on-ground network of volunteers, communities and organisations that contribute to the AMDI Database. This information helps communities look after their coastal environment by providing resources and support programs, and collaborates with industry and government to create change on a large scale. This presentation will showcase the new AMDI app and website, for streamlining data collection.

Morning tea and lunch will be provided.

This hybrid event is a collaboration between WA’s Coastal and Marine Community Network (CMCN), the Northern Agricultural Catchments Council (NACC) and Coast SWaP (South West & Peel Coastal Management Group). Perth NRM is hosting the Perth event through funding from a State NRM community stewardship grant.
