Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) Finalist in Awards for Excellence
Perth NRM Board Chair Mariyon Slany is pleased that the Swan Alcoa Landcare Program (SALP) continues to be recognised for its environmental work, after picking up a certificate of merit last week at the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) Awards for Excellent ceremony.
Ms Slany says that “This accolade follows on from the 2017 Landcare Award that the SALP program won earlier this year, and shows the strong position of Perth NRM in community landcare”.
The DMIRS Awards for Excellence recognises exceptional advances and innovation throughout the resources sector.
“We are very proud of our staff in that SALP was one of 11 finalists in the Community Partnerships category competing with BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto, Iluka and Atlas Iron”, says the Perth NRM Chairperson.

Established to provide community groups with a simple process to access funding for a range of landcare activities throughout the Swan and Canning catchments, since its inception in 1998 Alcoa and DCBA have provided more the $7 million to fund 1,300 on ground projects, with volunteers giving up nearly 176,000 of their time to plant almost 2.4 million plants which have revegetated more the 1,900 hectares.
In recognition of SALP’s achievements on projects including invasive weed control, dieback management, restoring areas of natural bushland and improving water quality, Alcoa is planning a special 20-year celebration of the program.
“Perth NRM – Living Perth provides both flexibility and long-term stability in its landcare partnerships and valuable technical expertise” Ms Slany explained “and SALP is an example of us as the central hub of natural resource management in the Perth urban area”.
