Horse property owners embrace Regenerative Agriculture at SJ Equine Workshop

15th April, 2025

Local landholders gathered in Serpentine on Saturday, 12th April for the SJ Equine & Pasture Management Workshop, hosted by Perth NRM.

The engaging half-day session featured local legend presenter Belinda Taylor, a seasoned pasture management and farrier consultant, who shared simple yet powerful regenerative agriculture strategies tailored specifically for horse properties.

Over the course of the day, attendees got tips on improving pasture and soil health, sustainable whole-property management, and stable fly control.

Participants also had the chance to connect with fellow landholders and receive answers to their specific questions, all while enjoying lunch, a cuppa, and engaging conversations.

This event marked the final ‘Knowledge Workshop’ for the first Make Your Hectare Count project – a successful initiative aimed at empowering small landholders to practice regenerative agriculture.

Throughout the project, Perth NRM delivered a number of engaging and informative events, including:

  • Heavenly Hectares Kalamunda (May 4, 2024): A collaborative event with the Shire of Mundaring and City of Kalamunda featuring Chris Ferreira and other presenters, covering topics from native vegetation preservation to livestock grazing management.
  • Kadina Brook Field Walk – Kalamunda: A hands-on tour with the Friends of Kadina Brook and local landholder Andy Farrant, highlighting community restoration work and property-scale improvements in soil and water management.
  • Gidgegannup Farmer Field Day (May 26, 2024): A chance for the community to explore regenerative agriculture and sustainable food production methods.
  • Landcare in Action Property Tour (October 20, 2024): Hosted by Simon and Rebecca Bell in Mundaring, this tour showcased seasonal grazing practices, bushland restoration, and resilience building.
  • SJ Foodie Bus Tour (November 23, 2024): A celebration of local producers and regenerative food systems, this tour included market visits, farm stops, and a tasting lunch with local volunteers.

The SJ Equine Workshop was proudly supported by the WA Government State NRM Program, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable land stewardship across the region and bringing the Perth chapter of the project to a meaningful close.

The Make Your Hectare Count project lives on!

RegenWA and the Lower Blackwood Catchment LCDC are pleased the successful funding of the next iteration of the Make Your Hectare Count (MYHC) initiative has kicked off, designed to provide WA’s small landholders with practical information and options to manage their properties.

Funded for two years, this next phase builds upon the MYHC trial project delivered over the past 12 months in the Perth region, as well as the Lower Blackwood LCDC’s Talkin’ After Hours Online Community & Information Hub.

The project will review, update, and re-release the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development’s Small Landholder Information Service fact sheets, produce informative videos and webinars, and deliver local events to further expand land management knowledge and skills.
