Citizen Science: November Update

13th December, 2022

Who visits your garden? We’d love to know about your furry, feathered and scaly guests!

Four months have flown by! Huge thank you to all the citizen scientists who have been completing their wildlife surveys and submitting data – 167 species so far, keep ‘em coming!

This month we have received a wonderful set of images shared by citizen scientist Sally Malone. A Red-capped Parrot has taken up residence in their existing nest box! Remember: any new wildlife-friendly structures for this project will be installed from March 2023. We’ll be having a workshop in February (date to be announced!) to provide guidance on this.

Also a reminder about the recent update to the Wildlife Monitoring Manual: If you see eggs or chicks in your nest box, reduce your inspections to once every four weeks until the chicks have fledged (left the box), to give the birds the best chance of survival. After this, you can then return to weekly inspections.

There’s still time to join the ‘Turning Gardeners into Conservationists’ project and contribute to our understanding of the benefits of wildlife friendly gardening – simply contact [email protected]
