Federal grant opportunities with Communities Environment Program

2nd August, 2019

The Communities Environment Program, first announced by the Federal Government in March 2019, released its Grant Opportunity Guidelines this week.

The Communities Environment Program, first announced by the Federal Government in March 2019, released its Grant Opportunity Guidelines this week. The program provides each electorate throughout the country up to $150,000 to fund small, community-led environment projects that address local environmental priorities.

To be eligible, your community group must be:

(a) Invited to apply by their Federal MP, and

(b)  An incorporated body, or sponsored by a Regional Land Partnerships service provider such as Perth NRM.

Perth NRM will be contacting all Federal MPs in our region to advise them that we are available to sponsor groups that do not have incorporated status.

Individual grants will range from $2,500 to $20,000, but can fund up to 100% of an eligible project, which must be completed by 31 December 2020.

However, the project will be deemed ineligible if it receives funding from any other government grant (Federal, State, Territory or local).

The grant guidelines state that grants can support a range of projects, including, but not limited to:

  • citizen science activities,
  • activities that protect or enhance the natural environment and/or support recovery of native species/communities,
  • activities that reduce threats and risks to the natural environment,
  • waste management activities (including clean-up events, recycling/upcycling programs etc),
  • activities that improve carbon sequestration,
  • educational activities that build community knowledge about their local environment and how the community can conserve, protect, monitor, and/or manage it sustainably.

Applications officially open on August 12, 2019.

This program has been established by the Department of the Environment and Energy, and will be administered by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science.
