Engaging Perth’s Community in NRM

29th March, 2019

During March 2019, Perth NRM has been out and about engaging with the community of Perth to promote natural resource management (NRM) including Traditional Ecological Knowledge, conservation and sustainability practices.

At Mundaring’s Blue Sky Festival we shared information around sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and pest control, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge with over 200 community members. Children and parents engaged in the activities and were fascinated by the iScope, using their smart phone’s camera app to magnify natural objects to see their intricate nature.

During Harmony week we facilitated two Noongar Six Season walks for the City of Gosnells at the stunning Brixton Street Wetlands and Mary Carroll Wetland. Elder Neville Collard shared knowledge with local residents of how the Noongar people lived during the season of Bunuru and the dreaming stories of the plants and animals that are found around the wetlands. They were fascinated to learn of the medicines that can be made from the sap of the Jarrah and Tuart trees, the science behind building mia mia (Noongar tents), and the relationship between the Wagyl (Rainbow Serpent) and the sedges that grow along the wetlands’ edges.

Students from UWA indicated there’s a bright future for environmental volunteering at the 2019 Volunteer and Community Impact Fair. Undergraduate and postgraduate students sought out the Perth NRM stall to enquire about volunteering opportunities and to learn more about the work of the natural resource management organisations. Post graduate students shared their own sustainable agriculture experiences and discussed how their work might align with different environmental groups and organisations in Perth.
