Preventing and controlling soil erosion, sediment runoff and sand drift from building, subdivision and construction sites resulting from urban development is a significant issue for Local Governments (LGs).
The environmental and financial impacts are considerable, and these are managed by Local Governments across Western Australia in a diversity of ways to varying levels of success.
In order to raise awareness, educate and inspire LGs to trial and/or embrace new tools and mechanisms to more effectively manage soil erosion, sediment runoff and sand drift, the Sediment Task Force is compiling the case study publication Examples of Local Government’s response to erosion resulting from urban development in Perth, WA.
This series of case studies is being developed as part of the Sediment Task Force Project which is sponsored by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, the City of Armadale and Perth NRM.

As is the case for many LGs, dust from subdivision and building sites is a nuisance, environmental, health and safety concern experienced by the City of Cockburn due to sand being blown onto the roads and pathways, and onto housing developments.
In their case study, the City of Cockburn share their three key success factors and their multi-pronged approach to preventing dust and sand drift from subdivision, building and construction sites in their jurisdiction. You can also learn about the City’s successful initiative to combat sand drift/dust from building sites via voluntary hydro-mulching of vacant blocks at a North Coogee subdivision and about the City’s strong commitment to ensuring compliance by implementing the City’s Local Law, plans, policies and guidelines related to soil erosion, sediment runoff, sand drift and dust management.
