Collaboration is key in protecting our coastline.

14th March, 2019

Perth is renowned for its coastal lifestyle, enjoying many social, environmental, cultural and economic benefits from its natural environment.

Community leaders, local and state government staff, researchers and environmental groups, all with a vested interest in the Swan Region’s coast and marine life came together at Perth NRM’s Coastal Forum 2019 in Scarborough this month to learn about the pressures impacting our iconic shoreline. Elder Noel Nannup performed a traditional Welcome to Country to open the forum.

On the day participants heard from a range of speakers as they were educated about seagrass restoration and the importance of planning and prioritising on-ground coastal management.  Coastal dynamics and the impact of wind and water erosion on dune revegetation was highlighted using examples from Cambridge.

Recreation and coastal development pose a range of threats to native flora and fauna, including macroinvertebrates, but delegates learned of actions being undertaken to combat them.  Programs such as Tangaroa Blue’s Australian Marine Debris Initiative highlight how the community can act and instigate behaviour change.

With an expected population growth of around 20% over the next 15 years in Perth, and the changing climate that continues to affect our coastline it is essential there is collaboration between NGO’s, government and the community to ensure effective management and mitigation of pressures on the coastal and marine environment.

The Forum was supported by a Coastwest grant from DPLH.
