An action-packed weekend for National Science Week

4th September, 2018

National Science Week came to an eventful close on Saturday (18 August) and Sunday (19 August) with Perth NRM participating in two big events.

Over the two days, Perth NRM participated at the Perth Science Festival (Town of Claremont) and the Community Science Expo (City of Canning) both of which were fabulous celebrations of science.

Perth NRM were delighted to meet, educate, and inspire the community on the wonders of our natural environment and highlight the amazing work we can achieve with community support. We celebrated the role of science in caring for our catchment and how this understanding can inform our own daily actions. People were able to investigate and learn about the little things they could do to reduce water pollution, to preserve habitats, and help care for local wildlife.

Over the two days at the Perth Science Festival, over 8,200 people were able to access information and take part in activities to learn how to reduce their impact on our catchment and coastline. Our staff were able to teach visitors about our marine, coastal, and riparian environments. Visitors observed marine specimens under microscopes and investigated examples of marine debris. Similarly, adults and children alike were able to play and interact with a river catchment model and investigate how actions at home can influence the health of our rivers and wetlands.

The Canning River gave a stunning backdrop as hundreds attended the Community Science Expo. The Expo allowed the public to see the relationship between science and sustainability. Our purpose-built sediment model was a key drawcard, and invited people to learn about the impact of sedimentation in our rivers and wetlands. The model was exceedingly popular with children who were able to make it rain and compare the movement of sand in vegetated and non-vegetated landscapes. Perth NRM also had a floral display of common native species and environmental weeds in the Swan-Canning River system. Families used their sensory skills in comparing native and non-native plants and illustrating key features through sight, scent, and touch. They could then go home and consider how they could help care for the river from their own home and garden.

We would like to take the opportunity to thank the many important people and organisations whose dedication, commitment, and support made the weekend so memorable. We hope everyone who enjoyed the events had as much fun as we did and felt as inspired as we were. It was enlivening to see the level of community interest and enthusiasm people have for our local environment. But for now, Perth NRM can reflect, reorganise, and consider how we can make next year bigger and better. We hope to see you all then!
