Opening rains and Gidgegannup Small Farm Field Day Coincide

5th June, 2018

Sunday the 27th of May welcomed the winter opening rains for our rural landholders and the Gidgegannup Small Farm Field Day.

Perth NRM exhibited in the Small Landholders Marquee and enjoyed good crowd engagement at the annual event even though numbers were affected by the weather.

Perth NRM’s marquee focused on landholder information for small farm owners, future land owners and new farm owners. A number of visitors had questions relating to specific weed issues and land advice which our team was happy to help with.

“Weeds and pests were hot topics with many people wanting information and advice on how to manage the weeds on their properties, including Cotton bush and Bridal Creeper” said Shay Crouch, Perth NRM’s Regional Landcare Facilitator.

Attending field days allows Perth NRM staff to engage with the land holders in the region and establish what workshops and events are of interest according to demand.

Pasture management for both livestock and horses was also topical with information distributed about tracking systems, maintaining ground cover, and the need to improve and maintain soil health for a more resilient pasture.

“It is great to see that people are interested and passionate about doing the right thing by the land, wanting to know how they can improve their soil quality, and use less chemicals” said Ms Crouch.

The event provided something for everyone, with shearing demonstrations, informative presentations, food and wine tastings and face painting and crafts. There was plenty of entertainment with live music throughout the day and equestrian events.

Perth NRM enjoys its continued support of the event and is looking forward to more stakeholder engagement at Dowerin Field Day and Karragullen Expo later this year.
