Federal Environment Minister visits South Perth Foreshore

27th March, 2019

On Thursday 21 March 2019, Federal Minister for Environment, Hon Melissa Price MP and Federal Member for Swan, Hon Steve Irons MP visited Salter Point Reserve

where Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) and the City of South Perth have been restoring natural foreshore habitat of the Canning River. The restoration project is funded by the Swan Canning River Recovery Stage 2 Program (SCRR2), on behalf of the Australian Federal Government.

The project is a partnership between CVA and the City of South Perth since July 2018, restoring sites through weekly visits to revegetate, control erosion, and treat weeds across the South Perth Foreshore. The project extends from Cloister Foreshore to Cygnia Cove and covers around 70 hectares of native bushland and wetlands.

The visit comprised of a tour lead by CVA and City of South Perth staff who were eager to demonstrate the changes being achieved with support of the SCRR2 Program. The tour concluded with the group planting some Nuytsia floribunda and Banksias within the reserve.

“The Swan Canning River Recovery Program Stage 2 provides additional support to the overall management of the river system. Though, more importantly, it has brought together a collaborative approach between governments, non-profits, community groups, and volunteers to improve local environments for the betterment of the river system.” – Jason Pitman, Swan Canning River Recovery Coordinator.

The work happening around Salter Point Reserve is one in a collection of other projects supported through SCCR2. This includes the work in eradicating Hydrocotyle delivered by SERCUL, the restoration effort lead by Friends of Bull Creek, and restoration work achieved by Friends of Bardon Park, to name a few.

Many of our grant recipients funded by the SCRR2 will start planning their community planting days as our wetter months roll around. More than 120,000 seedlings are expected to be planted this year with the help of Friends of Groups, local governments, and for-purpose organisations including SERCUL and CVA.
