Swan Canning River Recovery projects well under way

23rd October, 2018

A number of exciting projects in the Swan and Canning River systems are well under way, funded through the Swan Canning River Recovery Stage Two program.

Stage Two of the program aims to eradicate the hydrocotyle weed, provide support for practical community environmental action and help people understand how their actions affect the river.

Project updates, found below, highlight the amazing collaboration that these projects are undertaking and also provide opportunities for the community to learn more about the work that is helping to restore the health of our river systems.

Blackberry control at Bull Creek
Restoration of Bull Creek Catchment Stage 2: Enabling Communities for Healthier Rivers is a partnership between SERCUL the City of Melville, The Friends of Bull Creek Catchment, The Rossmoyne Senior High School Bushrangers Unit and Conservation Volunteers Australia.

The delivery of this community restoration project is supported by Perth NRM’s Swan-Canning River Recovery 2 grant. SERCUL has commenced clearing the blackberry with CVA’s Aboriginal training unit who undertook a power tool training session and will commence clearing the site next week.

Bodkin Park Design Plan
This project is a partnership with the City of South Perth, Water Corporation, SERCUL and the Local Community, to convert 300m² of a currently boarded drainage asset at Bodkin Park into a living stream improving both community amenities and water quality outcomes before entering the Canning River and entails.

The City has involved Syrinx to prepare a design plan and for community consultation. On Saturday, Nov. 3 (10 am – 11:30am) SERCUL will be hosting a drop-in feedback and information session at Bodkin Park with the design plan. Drainage construction will then likely be scheduled to start in December, but is yet to be confirmed.

Volunteers deliver restoration within South Perth Foreshore Reserves
Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA) have been engaging volunteers from the local and wider community through the Perth NRM Swan Canning River Recovery Stage 2 grant on the northern banks of the Canning River. Volunteers have been restoring sedge land and banks from Mount Henry Peninsula through to the Clontarf Foreshore improving biodiversity of natural habitat.

The highlight for the volunteers has been contributing towards the restoration of significant sites along the northern Canning River foreshore. These sites have included Bush Forever Site 333 (Canning River Foreshore Salter Point – Wilson), Salter Point Lagoon, (the last remaining estuarine lagoon on the Swan-Canning River System) and Whadjuk cultural sites at the Clontarf Foreshore.

The Swan Canning River Recovery program is funded through Australian Government support, under the Improving Your Local Parks and Environment program to improve the water quality and habitats of the Swan Canning River systems. Perth NRM manages the $1 million investment working in partnership with the local community to deliver environmental projects within the Swan Canning river area.
