Seed Collection Seminar

20th February, 2018

Perth NRM partnered with the City of Kalamunda, Tranen Revegetation Systems (Tranen), and a private seed collection consultant to present a seminar on Seed Collection in the hills.

Seventy-eight community volunteers, as well as representatives from local government and the NRM industry attended the seminar at Lesmurdie Hall, generously supplied by the City of Kalamunda.  The popular seminar was repeated after the initial Seed Collection Seminar, hosted by the Town of Cambridge, was booked to capacity.

Richard McDowell spoke on the role of seed in the environment, planning and identifying the purpose for seed collection, safety and health, timing of collection and quality limitations. Damian Grose, General Manager from Tranen and Vice-chair of the Revegetation Industry Association of Western Australia, took attendees through seed licensing and legislation, collection techniques and equipment, storage standards, and best practice techniques for the storage of seeds.

Comments from participants were very positive as reflected by comments from two attendees:

“I knew nothing before I came. I found it very simple – easy to understand and most informative – Thank you!”
and,
“A very interesting seminar with well educated speakers! This has helped inspire me to get more involved again with a local Friends group closest to Maylands. People here are clearly passionate and interesting. The information given is practical, useful and pertinent.”

Seed collection is a topic of great interest in the Perth region. The collaboration with local government has ensured the seminars can be accessed by a wide range of environmental volunteers and managers across the Swan Region, and their knowledge and skills increased.

Perth NRM thanks the City of Kalamunda, Tranen, and Richard for supporting the seminar, and ensuring its success.
